Water Contact Angle Explained: Why It Matters for Graphene Ceramic Coatings

Those round beads on freshly washed paint tell you something about how water meets the surface. The measurement behind their shape is called water contact angle. It is useful, but beading alone cannot tell you how much protection remains or how long a coating will last.

What the angle tells you

Water contact angle is measured where the edge of a droplet meets the surface beneath it. Below about 70°, water tends to spread out. Above about 90°, it forms a rounder bead. A higher angle describes a more water-repellent, or hydrophobic, surface.

Beading and sheeting describe different things

Beading describes the shape of the droplets. Sheeting describes water moving off the surface. When you rinse your car, watch both: how the drops form and whether the water leaves easily.

Even on coated paint, water can sit long enough to evaporate and leave mineral deposits. Keep drying your car after washing rather than relying on beading to prevent water spots.

When the water behaviour changes

Road film and other contamination can change how water behaves on a coating. A change in beading does not automatically mean the coating has failed. Start with a proper wash, then inspect the clean surface before choosing any further treatment.

If deposits remain, use a product intended for that contamination and follow its directions. Stronger chemicals are not a substitute for finding out what is on the paint.
